Horned Larks are not exactly a winter visitor since they are permanent residents in much of the US, including parts of southwestern New England. But we typically do not see them until the winter in eastern Massachusetts. These were photographed among the grasses at the base of the dunes along the Atlantic shore. There is a dusting of snow from the previous night.




There is a hint of the feathered tuft that gives the bird its name in the last photograph.
Very pretty. Never heard of it before.

I always enjoy seeing this striking bird. I didn’t know they were year long residents in SW Massachusetts, and did consider them winter birds.
