Summer continues to be extra wet and extra hot. But the hardcore photographers and birders are out there anyway. The tide was coming in and starting to cover the mud flats near the mouth of the Merrimack River. We hoped to find some interesting shorebirds before the rising water forced them to move. The areaContinue reading “Another Heat Wave”

Between the Storms…Part II
The mist and drizzle had lifted before we left the beach but the skies remained overcast. You’ll notice there is no blue sky in any pictures in this or the last post. The skies were filled with birds though. This is just a part of the huge flock of Tree Swallows swirling around us. AContinue reading “Between the Storms…Part II”
Between Storms…At the Beach
Friday morning was damp and cloudy but the weather was good enough to get out in the field between tropical storms. The remnants of Hurricane Fred, just a tropical depression, generated tornado warnings, high winds and heavy rain the previous day. And Henri hit us today as a tropical storm. I live on the fringeContinue reading “Between Storms…At the Beach”
More from a Hot Week
These are more photos from last week. This week is turning out to be wet and stormy. We are watching out for a possible hit by Tropical Storm Henri on the weekend as the finale. Last week was really hot and even the birds seemed to slowed a bit by the oppressive heat and humidity.Continue reading “More from a Hot Week”
Egrets and Herons
We had our third heat wave of the summer during the past week but we hardy (crazy?) photographers and birders were out looking for our favorite subjects. We went out in the morning and tried finish before it reached 90F (32C). The first of two posts from the week focuses on wading birds. The youngContinue reading “Egrets and Herons”
Plum Island Sightings
The Least Terns that nest on the southern tip of Plum Island have pretty much finished the breeding season. Most of the younger birds are now flying with the adults. There was also a flock of Common Terns on the beach and around Plum Island Sound on my last visit. Beak color and the patternContinue reading “Plum Island Sightings”
Sanderlings
I find that I have a backlog of photos to share. Time to catch up! Sanderlings are passing through on their way from breeding grounds in the high Arctic to beaches all over the world. The ones we see today at the refuge will winter on coasts from New England to South America. I amContinue reading “Sanderlings”
Missisqoui Visit
I just took my longest trip in some time. I went to my native home of Vermont to visit family and then went to the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. I’m vaccinated and so are more than 80% of Vermonters, making for a pretty stress free stay in Burlington. Missisquoi NWR is in Swanton and isContinue reading “Missisqoui Visit”
Some Mid-summer Birds
These are some photographs taken as July winds down. No specific theme, just some photos that I like. Tree Swallows are beginning to gather in large flocks before migrating south. They seem to be starting a bit earlier every year. These are pictures of individuals but I will posting some photos of the large flocksContinue reading “Some Mid-summer Birds”
