These two Barn Swallows flying around the nest under the eave in the background display the markings for this colorful bird. They have a deep blue back and tawny underside with a rusty throat and forehead. The tail is deeply forked with a thick white band near the end. The color of the underside can vary from pale cinnamon to tawny to dark cinnamon. Barn Swallows are found all over the world and their color pattern does vary. This is the typical North American appearance. True to their name, they almost always build their nests on human structures.

Wunderschön! Ich mag ja Rauchschwalben sehr, kann sie in den Sommertagen immer hautnah beobachten. Bei uns in Österreich sind jene aber anders gefärbt, sie haben einen weißen Bauch. 😉

Danke. I wondered how they looked in other parts of the world. I didn’t know how widespread and varied these birds were until I did a little research for this post.
