Black Guillemot

Black Guillemots are a type of alcid, birds that spend most of their lives out on the ocean. Alcids include Guillemots, Auks, Murres and Puffins. They nest in cliffs overlooking the water but are not found on land otherwise. Black Guillemots live in the waters of the Arctic and northern regions of North America, Europe and Russia. They appear in our New England waters in the late fall when the move a bit closer to the shores. This one is not in its mostly black breeding plumage. It was actively feeding near shore and I got a shot of it gulping down one of its catches.
