Found in the Clutter: Trio in Flight

The three birds flying together are, from left, a Semipalmated Sandpiper, an American Avocet and a Lesser Yellowlegs. The photo was taken in 2022 on Plum Island in Massachusetts. Avocets are rare on the east coast of the US above Virginia. Their usual breeding and migration area is the US west of the Mississippi River. In the east, they are typically only seen right at the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from the Carolinas over to Texas. The bird in this picture is what is referred to as a vagrant since it was way out of its normal range. It didn’t find a mate that summer but it apparently made some friends.
