Snapshot: Snowy Owl

Snowy Owls will roost anywhere, usually close to the ground. The Snowy Owls we see here live on the Canadian Arctic coast for most of the year. The ones in Russia and Scandinavian live along their Arctic coasts. They aren’t used to having trees around so they don’t rest during the day in a tree. We find them on the top of houses, on the ground in the marshes, on low fences and some strange spots. This Owl was sitting on the sheets of broken up ice on the Merrimack River in 2018. It wasn’t particularly concerned about floating slowly along. No one is going to bother it out there in the middle of the river.

  1. Nice picture of course…. It’s always a surprise to see what’s floating down the river…I never tire of seeing this bird!
