Green Heron

Green Herons are a short, stocky member of the heron family. They are quite colorful and have a very long neck which is usually retracted. They are relatively common but can be hard to spot on occasion as they lurk in the vegetation close to the water’s edge while stalking fish. They are known to use artificial lures, dropping small items like insects, feathers or sticks on the surface to attract fish. They summer in the eastern half of the US and upper Pacific coast of the US. They winter in Central America, the northern part of South America and in Florida and California in the US. I photographed this Green Heron in the Steven J. Young Marsh, Missisquoi NWR in northern Vermont.
