Snapshot – Bufflehead

I took this photo when the light was at the right angle to highlight the multiple colors caused by iridescence in the normally black appearing head of the male Bufflehead. There were also small water drops remaining on his head after he returned to the surface after a dive. These small wintering ducks are a sight to see here in the winter as they do group diving and frenetic mating rituals. Their compact shape and small bill gives them a toy-like appearance.

  1. I love how most water fowl that look like they have black heads actually have iridescent feathers and other colors in there. You really caught it here!
