Some Wood Warblers

Wood Warblers are a diverse North American songbird family that includes well over a 100 species. Their migration through the eastern US to the northern US and Canada each spring is a big event for birdwatchers, including some who aren’t particularly active for the rest of the year. Here are a few I captured recently.

The Black-throated Green does breed as far south as Massachusetts and this one was spotted on Plum Island.

The Yellow-rumped Warbler migrates a bit further north. This one was photographed near the New Hampshire/Canada border.

The Northern Parula also breeds further north and was photographed in northern New Hampshire as well.

Yet another northern New Hampshire find was this Mourning Warbler, the first I have seen. A life bird.

A Chestnut-sided Warbler has found a nice juicy caterpillar for lunch. A bit of the chestnut color on his side is visible.

Warblers are very colorful in the spring as they sport their breeding plumage. This is one reason for the great interest in seeing them among birdwatchers. A recent post featured another colorful Warbler, the dashing Common Yellowthroat with its black mask. They are one of my favorites so I have to post another photo that I took in New Hampshire.

The Warblers pass through our area again in the fall but they have lost most of their color by then. We are on the lookout for them but they are much harder to identify. They are very active insectivores and it is even more a challenge to see, identify and photograph them as they flit around in the foliage in the fall.

  1. I’m always amazed when I see wonderfully photographed warblers as I have trouble following them with the naked eye let alone through a viewfinder. πŸ˜† Thanks for sharing your gifts.

  2. Spring migration is full of fun surprises. I have never seen a mourning warbler (some day), but we have lots of common yellowthroats here. My husband calls them Frito Bandito because of the mask.
