Feathered Action: Falcon and Osprey

This is what I assume to be a territorial issue between two birds of prey. An Osprey flew over a large pool with a fish that it had caught somewhere else. Suddenly, a Peregrine Falcon that had been hunting shorebirds at the pool started chasing the Osprey. The Osprey is too large to be prey for the smaller Falcon. And I don’t believe Falcons are fish eaters so it wasn’t trying to steal the fish. I have to believe that the Falcon just did not want another predator in the area where it was hunting, even if it wasn’t a direct competitor. The Peregrine resumed its regular activity after escorting the Osprey from the scene. The Osprey continued on to wherever it was going before being harassed.

  1. It’s so fun seeing birds interact and wondering what exactly is going on. Your logic here makes good sense, but it is amazing the falcon would bother.
