I did not see many Snowy Owls this past winter and any sightings were from a long distance. That wasn’t the case a few years ago. This one was sitting on pile of sticks about 30 yards (27 meters) away. It was fluffed up for warmth in the winter cold and enjoying a little rest. It peeked at us but didn’t seem to be disturbed by our presence given the distance that we maintained and our quiet behavior. There were two Northern Harriers flying about and those were of more interest to him.

I have yet to see one in the wild… Great photo!

It tends to be boom or bust for us in Massachusetts. Some years there is an explosion of winter visitors and other years, like the past two, have little action. Experts say it depends on the number of babies and/or availability of prey from year to year.

Nice work! I like the white-on-white look. We get these too, sometimes. But seldom with snow!
