The Loggerhead Shrike is a songbird with a raptor-like beak. Shrikes, also known as “butcherbirds”, prey on insects and small vertebrates including other birds. They lack the powerful beak and the strong talons of a true raptor. But they can hold prey well enough to use their beak to dispatch their prey with a bite to the neck. They often impale their prey on a thorn, fence barb or sharp twig for later consumption or to assist in holding them while feeding. The Loggerhead Shrike is one of two Shrike species in North America. The remaining 32 species live in Eurasia and Africa. They are not found in Australia or South America.

A real live assassin bird…who would believe such a small bird could be so blood thirsty!
