This is one of five subspecies of Red-shouldered Hawks in North America. This form, extimus, is found in southern Florida. It’s color is much more pale in the head and breast than in the other forms. Photo taken in Corkscrew Swamp near Naples Florida in 2023.

Feathered Action: Long-tailed Duck
This male Long-tailed Duck is demonstrating his impression of a naval carrier pilot doing “touch and go” practice landings. I don’t know why he aborted his landing after hitting the water. He came right up and kept flying further along the shore.
From Deep in the Clutter: Wood Duck
This photo is from deep down in my photo clutter. It was in a 9 year old folder among a group that I was consolidating. The posing Wood Ducks caught my eye and I decided to do some processing. This pair of Wood Ducks was enjoying the early morning sun on top of a ratherContinue reading “From Deep in the Clutter: Wood Duck”
Found in the Clutter: American Golden-Plover
This long distance migrant nests in northernmost Canada and Alaska. It then migrates to Uruguay and adjacent portions of Argentina and Brazil during the Northern Hemisphere winter. The first bird still has some breeding colors. The second is a non-breeding individual flying over the beach with some heavy surf in the background. Photos from 2017.
Snapshot: Snowy Owl
Snowy Owls will roost anywhere, usually close to the ground. The Snowy Owls we see here live on the Canadian Arctic coast for most of the year. The ones in Russia and Scandinavian live along their Arctic coasts. They aren’t used to having trees around so they don’t rest during the day in a tree.Continue reading “Snapshot: Snowy Owl”
Feathered Action: Owl vs Everybody
Found while reorganizing files. These photos were published a few years ago as part of a longer post. I like the action so let’s have a rerun. A Barred Owl was being harassed by a group of birds that included Crows, Robins, Blue Jays, Chickadees and more. They were very vocal as they constantly swoopedContinue reading “Feathered Action: Owl vs Everybody”
Snapshot: Cooper’s Hawk
I noticed something at the top of the steps to the front door of my house as I was passing by the door. This juvenile Cooper’s Hawk wasn’t selling anything though. It was looking for a chipmunk. These little ground squirrels were pretty scarce this year! It was one of the offspring of the pairContinue reading “Snapshot: Cooper’s Hawk”
Snapshot: White Ibis
Humans preen to look attractive. Birds, like this White Ibis, preen to keep their feathers in the best condition. It’s a matter of health and survival. But we humans just see, and appreciate, the beauty.
Snapshot: Belted Kingfisher
Female Belted Kingfisher with its distinctive chestnut band. Males do not have one. Belted Kingfishers are one of the few bird species that has females that are more colorful than the males.
Snapshots: Coexistence
A White Ibis and a Tricolored Heron are peacefully sharing the marsh as they forage for lunch. A Northern Cardinal and a White-throated Sparrow taking advantage of our currently snow free winter to easily find food.
