The Tricolored Heron is a small heron, similar in size to Little Blue Herons and Reddish Egrets. It’s distinguished by the white band down the neck and white abdomen. The rest of the body is blue-gray with lavender to complete the “tricolor”.

They are active hunters at times and run about using their wings to stir up potential prey, mostly small fish. They will also spread their wings to create a shady area that attracts the little fish.

They typically hold their neck in a cocked position, as all herons and egrets do. The neck is very long though as evident when it extends to strike at prey as this one is doing below.
