This little half ounce (13 gram) bird is an athlete par excellence. Blackpoll Warblers hold the record for the longest non-stop migration flight by a songbird. They winter in northern South America and breed in northern Canada. They have flown non-stop for 3 days to cover 1800 miles over the Atlantic Ocean. They double their body mass before taking off in order to fuel themselves for the trip. We see them during migration as they refuel on insects living in the forest trees. As you may imagine, they are very active feeders!

Blackpoll Warblers don’t snatch bugs from the air like a flycatcher. They pick them off the bark and leaves. This one is eying a swarm of gnats but not partaking in a snack until they land.

I found your narrative particularly interesting about these little birds…Good work!
