The Greater Roadrunner is the state bird of New Mexico and is one of the things that come to mind when you think about the desert Southwest in the US. They can fly but typically run unless forced into the air. They hunt a large variety of prey from insects to rattlesnakes. The Coyote can never get the Roadrunner in the cartoons but in real life coyotes are twice as fast as roadrunners.
Photographed on a stone wall in front of someone’s house in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2018.

We don’t see roadrunners often here in northern NM, but we had one make a visit to our neighborhood late this summer. (Meep! Meep!)
