Herons

I came across a large number of Herons at a single pond. There were a few Egrets around but one section of the pond was crowded with Great Blue Herons of all ages with a half dozen juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron mixed in for good measure. I didn’t count the Great Blues but I would not be surprised if there were more than two dozen. Here are six gathered on one small section of the shore.

Night Herons usually roost during the day but some juveniles did venture out while I was there. This is one standing near a Great Blue. The Night Herons are smaller. This is a juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron judging by the pattern on the wings. We also have Yellow-Crowned Night Herons. Their juveniles have much finer streaking and darker bills.

These two are looking for small fish near the shore.

A Night Heron flying past some Great Blues….

I also had the opportunity to capture Great Blues in flight. They have a prehistoric look about them.
