Hot July Morning (Part 1)

We are in a bit of a heat wave here in New England. Not nearly as bad as the southern US but decidedly uncomfortable. The birds reduce their activity as the morning progresses and the temperature rises. But I did get some photographs before it got too hot and humid for man and beast.

As you might expect to see in a salt marsh, a Saltmarsh Sparrow sat in a small bush. They usually stay in the marsh grasses and only pop up for a quick look but this one posed for a picture. The orange-buff on the face is distinctive. They have an interesting breeding system. They nest where the monthly highest tide could flood the nest, laying their eggs right after one high tide and getting the fledglings out before the next.

Willets nest in the same marshes. They are fairly non-descript until they fly. Then the white in the wings and tail gives them a bold look.

Barn Swallows nest at the maintenance building on the wildlife refuge. I managed to capture one in flight. They are easy to identify with their deeply forked tail.
