Glossy Ibis

The current stormy weather pattern is limiting my field excursions but it does give me a chance to catch up with some topics that have been languishing a bit.

Glossy Ibis are wading birds that are a bit larger than a Crow. They have long legs and long, downward curving bill. They forage in wetlands and wet agricultural fields and are found in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. They reside along the southeast coast (Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico) of the US and on the major islands like Cuba and Hispaniola. Some migrate to the northern Atlantic coast in the summer.

They appear to be a uniform dark color. But in good light they show a variety of colors including maroon, bronze, emerald and violet. I photographed two that flew by toward the sun and the lighting revealed just some of that color.

Glossy is an appropriate name.
