Some More Wood Warblers

Here are a few more Wood Warblers as a follow up to my last post.

Yellow Warblers were the subject of a post I made not long ago. They breed in our area and we see them all summer. This one perched on an open branch in order to proclaim his territory. That provided an opportunity for some unobstructed photographs. The reddish-brown streaks indicate that this is a male.

Who’s peeking around the tree limb? Unlike most Warblers who feed in the foliage, Black and White Warblers feed on the trunks and limbs of trees much like Nuthatches. This is a female. The males are much more boldly marked than the females.

Blue-winged Warblers are yellow below, yellow-green above and have blue-gray wings with two bars. They have a black eyeline that is lighter in females than in males.

The one we had a close look at was nesting nearby and had a beak full of caterpillars for its brood, feeding its young and doing its part in keeping the caterpillar population in check.
