It is always nice to see some colorful birds return after a dreary, gray winter. Here’s a few recent sightings starting with a Barn Swallow. They have a blue back and head with a cinnamon colored forehead and throat. Their underside is tawny. They have long feathers on the outer edge of the tail. This one is perched on the security lamp of a maintenance building where several Barn Swallows nest each summer.

Baltimore Orioles have a black back and head, a bright orange underside and prominent white wing bars. They have a rich whistling song. They love fruit and frequent orchards and feeders that feature fruit slices or jelly.

The Scarlet Tanager lives up to its name. Males are bright red with black wings and tail. The females are very different in appearance with an overall olive-yellow color with darker wings.
